West Penn Medical School In Works

West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield
West Penn Allegheny Health System's plan to start a four-year medical school will succeed this year. Officials have been working to expand to a full medical school for nearly a decade, talking with various schools along the way.  West Penn Allegheny, the region's No. 2 health system, will be moving key services to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side and placing emphasis on care delivered outside its hospitals.

The medical school would be Pittsburgh's second, in addition to the University of Pittsburgh's.  West Penn Allegheny could fill a niche educating physicians to remain in the region. The University of Pittsburgh medical school has became so competitive that Pennsylvania residents comprise only 26 percent of the freshman class.  West Penn's medical school could fill the gap by educating doctors from the local area so they could practice in and serve the medical needs of the local community.
