Pittsburgh Marathon Alters Course

Pittsburgh Marathon Course

There are new starting and finish lines for the Pittsburgh Marathon.  Scheduled for May 15th, this year's race will have a registration cap of 18,000, but the new course could one day accomodate as many as 35,000 runners.

The starting line has been moved from Smallman Street in the Strip District to Liberty and Sixth avenues Downtown.  This will allow the field to back into historic Point State Park and give runners a long, wide straightaway to begin the race.  The finish line will shift to the North Shore near Heinz Field, an area better equipped to handle the high volume of runners and spectators than the blocks near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, where the race ended in past years. USA Track & Field has approved the course, which will be an Olympic trials and Boston Marathon qualifier.
