New Vaccine Factory in Hazelwood?
A long-proposed vaccine factory championed by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center may have found a home on the site of the former LTV steel mill in Hazelwood. Congressional leaders and UPMC officials said the facility is well suited for Hazelwood because it is close to academic institutions, tech companies and researchers.
The government has considered the project for four years. If built in Pittsburgh, the facility would cost $600 million to $800 million. UPMC would pay 51 percent. At least three institutions elsewhere in the country are likely to submit bids to the Department of Health and Human Services, which set aside more than $12 billion to improve vaccine production. It is unclear how much support UPMC's proposal has, but a federal official called UPMC's ideas impressive during a 2009 congressional hearing.
